More Giving Options
One of our favorite charity sites barely qualifies as charity at all. Even those who are extremely picky about to whom and to what causes they give money can get excited about this one. Kiva.org provides microfinance loans (small loans) to third world residents who are looking to start a business or grow the business they already have…but who lack the seed money. We’ve been Kiva supporters for years, and feel that their work is very important. Here’s a segment from a PBS Frontline special.
So, while you never “get your money back”…you DO keep control of it and get to loan it over and over. That’s a LOT of satisfaction for your dollar donated.

Another great option is World Vision. They’ve been around for a long time and have a solid track record in fighting world hunger. You can choose to sponsor a child directly, or they also have an innovative program where you can directly donate a goat, duck, rabbit, sheep or chicken which will provide ongoing benefits in terms of food production for a home…and in some cases, enough extra to sell products for a profit. | |
| Compassion International exists as a Christian child advocacy ministry that releases children from spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty and enables them to become responsible, fulfilled Christian adults.
Founded by the Rev. Everett Swanson in 1952, Compassion began providing Korean War orphans with food, shelter, education and health care, as well as Christian training. Today, Compassion helps more than 1 million children in 26 countries. |
